Dear Chillen and Mom

Well, here I sit, munching on cookies and trying to write to my favorite family.

If I figure right, today should have ended the Laurel Conference and Jubilee so now at 7:30 p.m. should start the last big night for you two.  I got your letters written on 20 & 21 today, including 4 from Carol.

That's the way it goes with Chipper.  The time for the lion and the lamb to lie down together is not here yet.

Susan, you should be ashamed for Mother to have to put her foot on your face to make you write a letter to me.

I'm sure glad Daddy could use that bottle you found.  I'd hate for you all to have to drink it.  And you can have a brownie button for turning in the billfold, too.

Your dress must have been pretty expensive at that price, but if it makes you look like a little kid, that will be OK.

From our #1's letters it sounds like she had a ball before the conference ever started.  I still don't know if she was worth the cost, but it's too late now, her hide is not worth that much.

If poultry does get real cheap from the corn blight, you had better see how many you can put in the freezer. That would be some cheap eating.

You call the money "P-asters" here.  I don't suppose there are a lot of beggars for a war zone, but there are plenty around and of course kids want money or candy any time they can get it.  They haven't gotten any from me yet.

The men have small beards, maybe 100 hairs on their chin, but that's all.  I understand the TSgt that did work for me went without his shirt one day and the students almost laughed him out of town for his big pot gut and hairy chest.  So I'll keep mine hid (The hairy chest, that is).

Oh, the scouts were on separate sides of the school courtyard, 50 feet apart and they were only 10-14 years old too.

I haven't seen my Army friend recently.  I did work with him at Kogsler but not now.

Tuesday August 25

Dear family,

Well, guess what - today I didn't get a letter from you.  But I did get a big box so that more than makes the difference.  Thanks so very much for everything.  The cookies were not broken too badly and even the crumbs taste great.  And was I ever surprised at the peanuts.  They will be save for some day when I need a special boost.

I did have some trouble unfolding the newspaper so I could read it but that's OK.  I presume the picture of Mother was taken at the state park too.  I'll just keep it for a while.

I really appreciate everything but most of all I appreciate the thoughts behind the package.

Today I decided to goof off so I left at noon and came back to the hotel.  After opening my packages and checking everything, I load down for a couple of hours nap.  Then I walked over to the BX to get some spray starch for uniforms.  On the way, I went by the place where the birthday party will be Saturday night, just so I could be sure to find it..  I didn't stop in but it's easy to find.  It overlooks a big outdoor market, so I walked thru sight seeing.  Among other things, I watched 2 women take a ring out of a pigs nose.  He weighed about 50 pounds and did he ever squeal.  Then there was a pet shop with some baby kittens about 4 or 5 weeks old. A young boy tried to tell me they were tigers.  Of course, they weren't.

They had some nice combination tape recorder/radios in the BX today.  They were $35 so maybe payday I will get one if they still have them.  They probably won't, that sort of stuff never lasts.

Well, today 5 VNAF men were assigned to the section.  They all speak some English and went thru a repair school a couple of months ago so I guess that should make my work easier.

There are plans to turn the whole section over to the VNAF in 3 months.  Maybe we will make it.  Then I will be looking for a new job but don't worry that I might be sent way off.

Well, I suppose by the time you read this, school will have started, so you can all tell me about that.  I'm expecting honor roll on all 4 of you all year long so start it out on the right foot.  That shouldn't be hard for such smart kids as you are.

Well, I'm about out of news and I want to write Pres. Griner so I'd better close for now.  May the Lord bless each one of you.  Be good and Sweet.

Love, Daddy

Monday 24 August 1970

Hi, Y'all

Today was much mail day so now I'd better answer.  I got 2 from you, 1 from Sgt. Wood and one from your folks.  I'm sure glad you are selling all the kittens and have some money to spend.  You had better be feeding Zack some liver once in a while.

Sounds like a pretty new dress you got, Mother.  Would you believe I haven't had civilian clothes on since I left Mom's.  We can't wear them any place.  After I move out to the barracks I can wear them on that little place, but not to TSN or any place where I'm on civilian property.  Of course, I don't expect to go much of any place except to Church.

Sweetie, I'll let you decide what you want to do in the Woman's Liberation Movement, but since you are already Mother and Father you can't gain much either way.

Well, did you kids have nightmares from "Jack the Giant Killer" this time?  I hope not.  If Jimmy made 33 cookies and they were as big as Nancy said, that must have been a lot of cookies.  I still haven't received my "care" package, but it takes 10-15 days and this is only a week today.

Boy, you had better be careful about giving all your bottles away.

Did you get your hair cut real short again, Mother? You must all be sporting crew-cuts by now.

I'm glad you had a good party at Moody, but don't let all those compliments go to your head.  And thanks for all the gossip too.  Sgt. Wood didn't say anything about a stabbing.  You seem to do pretty good at collecting news outside the Wives Club.

You can be bet your last nickle I don't write you any letters at midnight.  I try to be in bed by 9 p.m. as 5 a.m. comes early 6 days a week.

You remember everybody told you it would take a year to recover fully from the operation.  Don't try to hurry the exercises, they can come later.  You are the prettiest girl that ever walked to me anyway so don't worry about the rest.

No, I never got that anniversary card you are talking about.  Maybe it was on that plane that ditched.  It would have been about that time.

Well, it's about bedtime and I am tired so I'll close for now.  Be sweet, I love you all.

Your Daddy,  Jim

Saturday, 22 August

Dear Gypsy family,

Are you all back home by now?  I hope so.  It's 7 p.m. and I have returned from work, eaten and got a shower so now I'll try to start on my weekend letter.  I have 2 of your letters to answer because only answered 1 of the 2 I got yesterday and another one came today.  I usually get them 4 days after the postmark and that is great considering that the time change makes it only about 3 days.

I will be looking for my "care" package since you have sent it.  Before I forget it, when you send the priesthood and Sunday School manuals, also put in that little book, "Truth Resorted" by Bro. Hinckley.  We have a paperback copy of it somewhere in the bookcase.  And, if you wanted to get me something real nice for Christmas, a pocket-sized hymn book would be real nice.

I was real excited to hear that you are going to have Home Study Seminary this year.  It's nice to meet in class if you have a big class, but they use such great materials for the lessons.  And, even though it's a long drive to Tallahassee, especially at night, I think it will be well worth it (even if Mother has to drive) for the fun and fellowship.  Just think of that Scripture Chase competition, and the fun and dances, etc. afterward.  Of course, starting at 10 a.m. should have you home by dark.  Will you also meet weekly with Bro. Isgett?  The biggest problem will be the self discipline required to keep going.  I would suggest that you still get up early, get ready for school, eat, and then spend 30 minutes every day on your lessons.  I'll bet Jimmy could even give you scripture chase problems so you could drill for speed.  You won't be handicapped by deadheads in class who don't want to learn.

Susie, I want you to check into that program where seniors go to VSC and earn credits while still working on graduation.  See if you might be interested in it next year.

Mother, if the Seminary meeting is on Saturday, that may be the same day as Assembly and you could drop the kids off, go to assembly and pick them up afterward.

Sweetie, thank you for the story that Walley Allen told.  I do appreciate your stories, jokes, etc.  Keep them coming.

But the best story was the one about the kitten playing with Amile's tail?  I almost busted a girdle string.

I guess one reason it takes so long to write to you guys is that I usually sit here in my window and daydream and watch the world go by.  Right now I'm so sleepy that I think I'll stop for tonight but before I do, thanks for the picture of the kits and kids.  Girls I showed your picture to all the single guys and asked if they would like to write you, but there were no takers.  Bye-bye.  P.S.  Only teasing.

Sunday August 23

Well, I'm back.  Last night a new instructor at school who I had heard was LDS came by my room so he went with me to church today.  He had been on a mission in Hong Kong about 3 years ago and speaks pretty good Chinese so he was a fabulous success with the Chinese girls in the branch.  He is single but engaged but I'll be he has a good tour with the girls looking out for him.  They had a party last night (I didn't go) for Bro Lewis' birthday.  He sent his maid out for 20 bananas and 3 pineapples.  She thought he wanted 20 bunches of bananas and looked all over for them, so long in fact that he had to leave for the party before she returned.  When he returned and found all the bananas, he almost cried.  Luckily, she could only find 15 bunches.  Can you imagine?!!  Anyway, after Sacrament today it was decided to have as many as could, stay and eat fruit salad so the Sisters sliced bananas and cut up the pineapple, added some sliced peaches and nuts, etc. and several of us stayed for fruit salad and root beer.  It was fun.

I spoke in Sacrament Meeting today about the need for a positive attitude about a tour in VN.  I guess it was well received.

Next Saturday night, 2 of our Chinese sisters are giving a birthday party in their home for their younger sister who will be 19.  It's only about 5 blocks from the hotel, so I'm planning to go.  I understand the family is pretty well off so it should be interesting.

Say, Boy that sounds like a real cool car you saw.  I'll see what can be done about that stuff you asked about. Of course you know that boys have to be good for Santa to come.  If the grass at the lawyers is getting real thick and hard to cut, you know how to change the wheels to cut higher.  Just be sure you put them back real tight.  I hear you are doing real great on the Family Home Evening lessons.  Keep it up.

Well, I hope you have cornered the cat market and sold them all.  From the way it sounds, you will soon have some more stock.

Nancy, reconstituted ice cream is made with a powder mix that you add water to and then freeze.  After a few days, it starts to taste pretty good.  I'm glad that you have caught up on my mail.  I write it, but I can't deliver it too.

Mother, your finances will probably be close in Sept. due to school, Seminary, etc., but then should start to ease up.  Don't forget, too, that you will have to put a @20 deposit to get the gas turned back on.

I want to start soon to write a personal letter to each of you children.  You won't have to share it with anyone unless you want to and only parts of it if you want to.

And WHAT IS SO FUNNY ABOUT DADDY SINGING IN THE CHOIR??  It's probably just as well that I didn't have a tape recorder.

It wasn't Pres. Anderson's family who went home, it was Bro. Lewis'.  I thing they went back because of schools and living conditions generally.  Pres. Anderson will be leaving in about 5 more weeks they said today.  He will really be missed and I pray they don't look my way to fill his shoes.

I hope to get some pictures of the branch members soon so you can get a look at them.  One of the guys offered to teach me how to develop and print B&W film.  The hobby shop will only be a block from the barracks when I move.  I guess that I'll still attend Saigon Branch after I move.  Actually, it will be more convenient than it is now, and there is talk of disbanding the group there in MACV Annex since it is only 10 or 12 members and several of them want to come in to Saigon anyway.

Nancy, X stands for a kiss and the X tells you where to put it.  The O is for hugs, like - put your arms around and squeeze.  So I'll close for now and send a whole sack of X's and enough O's to go around.  I love you all.

Dear Gypsy family,

Today I got 2 letters from you.  That makes up for the one I didn't get yesterday.  I suppose by now you are most all home except Carol so you should have lots to write about.  It was sure good to hear from you but I noticed that one of the children, I won't mention His name, his misses several days now.

That must have been some birthday cake.  Well, at least it didn't blow up.  I bet it even tasted good.

Poor Dolly must have been a very good hog to make such tender pork chops.

I hope you have gotten the letter about conference by now.  If not, Brother Norrs was called as 2nd counselor in the district.  There were about 300 guys from 22 different groups.

Don't get your hopes up about a hope chest.  They are too darn big to ship, must be 5 feet long.  Besides, you have your big trunk.  Why don't you get a batch of ambition and repaint it black?

Yes, I am on separate rations.  They put all the AF people on, but the Army won't let their men draw it.  They have to have a meal pass.  But, I've got to start the cutback - I weighed today and had gained 5.

I hadn't heard anything about a cut of 15,000 men in Saigon.  But it won't make any difference to me.  This program has got Nixon's personal support.

The credit union should send a statement each 3 months and I would like to see them each time, just to keep check on them.

I really appreciate your newspaper clippings.  It's nice to keep up on all the local news.  When I work all day I sometimes don't get the Stars & Stripes as it doesn't get to the base until about 1:30 (I go to lunch from 11 to 12:15) and the news stand closes at the hotel at 6 and I don't get there until after 6:30.  Usually IA can borrow one to read, though.

I find that 21st birthday hard to believe.  Remember, I was supposed to wait till you are 40 and then trade you for two 20's.  By that time I may need 2 to take care of me in my old age.

Well, I'm writing this at work.  Today I got ride of my TSgt and got a SSgt new from the States.  I think it will work out better.  I found that the tech had foot in mouth problems.  Well, it's time to get back to work.  Sure wish I was with you all gallivanting around the country.  I love you.

August 20

Dear Mother and Children:

How is everybody around your house today?  I hope you are all happy and sweet as can be.  As for old Dad, he is considerably irritated.  Somebody stole my radio yesterday while I was at work.  It was locked in my room and the maid was the only one who had a chance to get it.  Whoever got it even took a spare battery and the box it came in, including the sales ticket.  We can't prove the maid got it but I think she will be fired anyway.  But, it's gone and there's no good in crying over spilled milk or stolen radios.

I have made up my mind to move out to the barracks as soon as a room is vacant, probably about Sept. 6.  It would mean a 3 minute bus ride or 10 minute walk instead of 30-45 minutes bus ride twice a day.  Also, I can leave work early sometimes.  As it is, we only have regular bus service at the school early in the morning, at noon, or at 6 p.m. so to leave any other time means catch a ride if you can or a 5 minute walk and 3 bus changes.  Other advantages would be:  BX 1 block, library 500 feet, Church (base chapel with L.D.S. meeting) 1/4 mile, service club, snack bar, movie, swimming pool, bank, hobby shop, etc. all within 1/4 mile.  It would be a small 1-man room.  The barracks is a tropical style one and is real comfortable.  Disadvantages would be no private bath, not as good a chow hall and maybe more interruptions from neighbors but there would not be the city traffic noise.  It would cost the same for maid services.  Many of the guys I'm working with live there now, including my boss.  And it would get me out of downtown.  You know how I hate big cities anyway.

You have probably read and heard about the congressional hearing on drug use over here.  I don't think my outfit has much of a problem but I understand that thing are really popping at Cam Rahn Bay.  One of my men just came back from there and that they arrested about 1/2 the S.P.'s there yesterday as pushers, etc.  It probably will be in the papers before you get this.

Hey, how about putting one of your little calendars in the next letter.  I have lost mine.  Might not even know when to come home.

We did a lot of work yesterday and today in re-arranging my supply room and I can see plenty of work to do.  But then, I've got a lot of time to do it so I took this afternoon off.  This Capt. that is the school commander thinks all his NCO's should work an 11 hour day like he does.  Of course, he is afraid to trust his NCO's so that is the reason for his being there all day.  He only has 60 more days to go.

I seem to be awfully short of things to write about today.  Did I tell you that I love you, Mother?  How about Jimmy?  And Susan?  Did I, Peanuts?  I spose I love Carol, too.  Any how, I love you all.  And I miss you very much.  See you tomorrow - in a letter.

Your curly-headed Daddy, Jim

Dear little family,

Greetings from dear old Saigon.  Hope you are all well and happy.  I got your letter of the 15th today and of course I was glad to get it, even if the girls did write their sad tale of woe about the rags and hairy legs.  Cheer up, it can only get better.  And think of all the space in your closet and that big, clean room.

Darling, I will try to write you personal notes from time to time but usually it will be "family" letter.  By the time you read this you probably will be back from Jubilee tired and excited and all worn out but I hope you have a ball.  It should be in the new building this time.  I'll be thinking of you.

And I'm sure Carol was excited about her trip too.  I'll be waiting to hear from her.

I love your poem you sent and I'll try to remember it.

I took those 3 Church News that you sent with me Sunday and I thought there would be a fight over them.  They were "new" to everybody and you are doing something to send them.

Don't you believe that I'm rich.  Like I wrote, my living expenses are almost exactly $2 a day, there are at least 12 days to payday and I have $24.35.

I really don't think you should worry about your colored hostesses now.  You are getting plenty of parties now without them and I don't want you to be pushing hard.  Next spring if it looks like you could, and would want to be promoted will be plenty of time to go back and work them.  That joke about the anti-litter campaign was __________.  I told it to a couple of guys and they laughed.

Well, news is short and I'm tired so I'll stop for now.  Remember, I love you all.

Love and kisses, Daddy

Dear Happy family,

As I am waiting for the day to end, I will try and write a little note to you.  I guess it is official that I am Senior Advisor in charge of Training Aids and Laboratory.  That means that I supply the equipment that the instructors use in teaching.  I have 7 people working for me, 1 TSgt, 1 SSgt, 1 Sgt, 1 A/C, 2 VN women and 1 VN man.

We have 2 tape laboratories with 60 stations in each where we play tapes while they listen and talk back to the tape.  These 2 labs are operated by the women.  Then we have a supply room where we issue tapes and recorders to instructors for use in their classrooms.  We also issue tests, charts, maps, etc.  My office is in the supply room where the VN man works.  Then I have 2 repair shops where the G.I.'s work.  I am supposed to have 4 more V.N.A.F. men working in the shops and hope to get them in a few days.  We have 40 tape recorders, about 1500 reels of tape and 400 small dictionaries.  I am also part time supply Sgt and misc. other jobs.  My duty hours now are from 7 am to 6 pm but I don't have to be here all day, every day.

My boss is a real fine MSgt but the OIC is a Capt. like the south side of a horse but he only has 60 days to go and the major who will replace him is real great.

I think I'll like things here better than where I was.  It is all on the ground floor where the other was 6 stories high.  They are building a new building here that will be 3 floors.  When it is finished sometime in 1971 they will combine 5 parts of the school here.  It is on the edge of Saigon, near the country and about 3 miles from TSN airfield.

Working longer days should make the time pass faster.  I think I'll be fairly busy, not too much time to sit around on the job.  At least, there is a lot that I can do, if I want to.

I didn't get a letter from you today but I can't complain - I got 3 yesterday.

But the way, when I said check at Sears on a tape recorder, I didn't mean to get one necessarily.  If its going to be too much, I'd rather just forget about that idea and buy a big one that we can all enjoy after I get back.  I don't have a lot of faith in these small ones, even the best ones.

It has been real cool and pleasant all day with a good breeze and no rain.

I got a haircut on my lunch hour today and will I be glad to get a bath.  I think more went down my back than on the floor.

Well, time to go survey my domain (check that everybody is working) so I'll close for now.  I'll send a bunch of hugs and kisses to you all.  Divide them out evenly.

Love,  Daddy

17 August

Dear Family,

Today I got three letters from you and you bet! that made me happy.  Today has been a long, busy day for me as it was my first day at TSN.  I still don't have a job for sure but may take over the audio-visual department including a learning laboratory with 120 tape deck teaching machines.  It is a big operation with 5-8 people working for me but won't know for sure until tomorrow so more on that later.

Chalk up another one for the postal system.  On the day I mailed that letter to the Fords, I also sent one to you, your folks and my mom.  I dropped all four in the box at the same time.

I just don't know what to think about getter a letter almost every day from the man of the house.  But I'm glad for them.  I couldn't tell from that clipping though where he will go to school but it sounds like Silas Mahone again.

It sure is a shame that Carol took all of you girls good clothes with her.  Did Bro. Barlow take a trailer to haul them?  I hope she got off all right.  Actually, she should be arriving shortly after I am writing this.  $120 should be enough for her.  When will she be home, about the 28 or 29th?

That sure is some wild stationery you are using, Mother.  Why don't you check with Sears for a cassette type tape recorder and see what they ask?  Who checked yours out, did you try Leo's where we got the refrigerator?  If not, try them first.

About those ants, I'm sure the rain is the big cause.  Did that dust that I bought ever get spread?  If not take a tin can and punch holes in it so it can be shook out like a salt shaker.  Dust it all over under the house, specially around all the posts and pipes that they can crawl up.  Be careful not to breathe too much and wash real good with soap afterward.

When I went to that Mexican joint I was with 3 guys I work with.  I haven't been back since.  All the K.P.'s are hired civilians but they have a big machine that washes and sterilizes the dishes.  We eat from Melmac trays here.

By the way Peanuts, I didn't mean to slight you with that remark about your brother writing every day.  It's just that you have done it from the very first and I just expect a letter from you everyday.  I just didn't know such "Brains" lived at my house to win such a fabulous prize.  After that, you both better be "Straight A" students this year.  And don't throw those records away, maybe there are some that the mortician would appreciate.

What did I just write about being careful in cleaning out the gutter?  You see, I can almost picture what is happening.  Maybe you should have tied a rope around her neck for safety if she slipped.  Just wait until I get my hands on that Carol.  Imagine!! She said I had a "cute, pudgy" face.  Where does she think she got her good looks from?

If Crest is the answer to dental bills, you better by a case of it and eat it for breakfast.

Jimmy, how come you didn't just pick those big, hairy worms off the azalea bushes and step on them.  By the way, how is your friend Mr. Mitchell.  Do you visit with him a lot?

Mother, is it true that you just nag, nag, nag?  You know you shouldn't do that.  Unless they need it of course.

Did the Fords drive to New Jersey?  I'm looking forward to a letter from them.

I guess Carol could waited until the second time Clayton called.  But that's her problem.  I sure hope you have gotten the brakes on the Redbug fixed by now.  I know it can be annoying.  They should have put on new brake linings when they fixed the leak.

Did you buy Zachary some liver when you sold her child?  You had better treat her good.

It has been almost cold here the last couple of days.  It was down to about 70 degrees this morning.  Of course it has rained or been cloudy for three days now.  They say March and April when it gets real dry are the hot months, sometimes 110 degrees or more.

Well, I'm about written out and its time for bed, 8:30 p.m., so I'll close for now.  I love each one of you and miss you so very much.  See you tomorrow - in another letter.

All my love,

Dad

15 August

Dear Family,

Happy birthday, dear mother, happy birthday to you. I hope you had a happy day today and don't feel any older.

Congratulations, Carol on your award. I know you will be away when the letter comes, but I'll say it anyway. I am proud of you and I know Y.C. next year will be great if you help to plan it. One little hint of advice from old Dad, write down every little detail, both good and bad from this year now and then you will have good references next year. It's so easy to forget. Of course your #1 reason for not enjoying this year won't help too much, boys will always be choosing "younger" women.

I'll bet the Linds were really good speakers. I heard him on a Priesthood broadcast a year or so ago.

I'm kind of disappointed in the boys from the branch too, but, Y.C. is to help widen your circle of friends and meet new, different people. You see the kids from your own branch almost every day. Don't think the world only goes as far as you can see it.

Sounds like you had some real fireworks across the street. Speaking of people up on the roof, did anyone ever clean out the gutter along the front porch? It was plugged with leaves, you know. But, BE CAREFUL - DON'T FALL OFF!! A bath by candle light sounds romantic. How about it, Nancy?

Thanks for the blessing. I just felt like I needed it here to read once in a while. I got a nice letter from Pres. Griner today, too. I really appreciated it.

I just heard on the radio that the corn blight like you sent me the clipping on has spread all over the midwest and may cut the U.S. corn crop by 1/2. That's sure bad.

No, Nancy, I don't get Southern Serenade on my radio but the FM station here has good music like the one in Valdosta. The other military station (AM) has all kinds of music, stories, sports, etc. Then there are 3 or 4 Vietnamese stations but their music is worse than Japan.

Hey Man, you had better be glad school starts in 2 more weeks. Your last couple of letters have been pretty good but the spelling could be better. I want to see a report card with all "A's" & "B's" from you this year. I know you can do it, just don't play as much, specially with girls. You had better watch for Granddaddy on those one-way streets. He is getting kinda old and doesn't think so fast sometimes.

I bet your Mom is having kittens over the beer joint. Where did they open it up at? I'll give it 3 months to close up, they are both too hard-headed for it to last any longer.

Today is some sort of holiday here. Kids across the street have been playing with sparklers and now have a fire burning right on the sidewalk.

Even if you don't want to be real mean, you can always call the bank and get the balance on the account. And you know, I don't have any way of checking when you pay off your boyfriend with a check on the other bank. Guess we'll first have to trust each other, suppose?

I'm glad the kids are on my side on the R&R question, even if Mom isn't 100% yet. But, I wrote you more on that the other day, We'll see.

I appreciated your sending the tracts, I hadn't seen the one "Life's Greatest Questions". We have a good stock of all the others here.

I'm afraid that you can only get one paycheck a month from Uncle S. That's all I get too. So if you want another one, you had better talk "Tupperware".

Today I was over to the church and coming back the bus kept me waiting nearly an hour because of an accident. Here is what I saw and did:

First a man rolled out his Lambretta scooter and then he, 3 kids and a little pug-nosed dog got on and rode away. Next, a family of 4 came walking by and as they neared, the man took off his hat and begged me for money, all of them smiling all the while. Then 4 Boy Scouts came by carrying packs to go camping. This was on a busy street, I don't know where they would camp. Then, 2 very nice looking older ladies came by, stopped and showed me a letter, typed in English saying that they were from an orphanage and asking for money. They also had pictures of the children. Since I only had 500 Piastres (about $4.25) I didn't given them any. They went away smiling too.

Then 2 boys about 8-10 years old came by and wanted to talk. Of course they didn't speak English. They had to feel the hair on my arms (these men don't have any) and they wanted me to give them my pencil, cap or anything I would give them. About then it started to rain so I went to a shelter and they left. How's that for 30 minutes of excitement?

Well, I'll close for now and finish tomorrow.

Note: I was named as Youth of The Year for our mission. The "Linds" being referred to is Astronaut Don Lind who is a member of the Church and the guest speaker at Y.C. = youth conference.

Dad made reference to my not enjoying Youth Conference...Clayton hurt my feelings after hanging out with another girl.  The both of us continued our dating until he left for his mission, but Mom never forgave him for hurting me.

The gutter cleaning fell to me and because of the tin roof and water being used to clean out the leaves, I almost fell off the roof, but was stopped when one of my feet got caught in the gutter.

16 August

Well I just got in from Church and its raining frogs and fishes so I'll finish my letter and then when it stops, I'll go get my Sunday paper. I found out where those Scouts were going yesterday. There is a big Buddhist school right by the church and this morning the whole courtyard was filled with Boy and Girl Scouts who had camped there overnight.

Our meetings were real good today. There were 25 for Priesthood and about 40 for Sunday School and Sacrament. They were to baptize a sailor, but I didn't stay for that as this rain was threatening then.

An Army E-6 was supposed to go with me today, but I waited 45 minutes at the bus stop and he didn't show. They asked me to speak next Sunday in Sacrament so I'll try again to get him there.

I sure enjoyed the pictures from the ark and I'll send them back in the next letter. I looks like that would be a good place for a picnic. Let's go!

Like I told you the other day, I start working at TSN tomorrow. I really don't know what I'll be doing or what my hours will be. The school is not really on the base but is near there, kind of out in the country, I think. It will be a change anyway.

I am making progress in my church job, I guess. We have records on all of the VN members, but it takes months of maybe never getting GI records. Please check with the clerk there to see if they have sent out the pink copy of me. They really need it here. Also, the supplies for next year hadn't been ordered so Pres. Andrews asked me to take care of that today. It won't be much, Priesthood, Sunday School and MIA, but he thought that they were ordered back about June 15.

Well, the rain has about stopped and I am out of news so, time to quit.

Be sweet, be careful and God bless you.

Your loving old Dad, Jim

14 August

Dear Y'all

How are you all today? Mean and ornery or good and sweet? Got your letter today written last Saturday. Mother said it was the 8th and Nancy said the 7th. I'm glad you agreed on the day of the week anyway. And was I ever surprised. A letter from the boy 2 days in a row!! That's wondrous.

I hope your eye is OK now, Mother. I won't be surprised at anything that happens to the bunch of you from now on, First Carol's toe, now Mother's eye, next Jimmy will probably break his arm by running into an elephant on his bicycle. Who cleans up Chipper's mess?

I got 3 or 4 big brown envelopes including the info on the food. Is that the one you were referring to? Do you want me to send it back to you?

Sorry I failed to comment on the Roadshow pictures. I did enjoy them, the costumes looked real sharp, even the Grandmother.

You said not to jay-walk in traffic here, that is the only way to cross the street most places as there are few lights. But even the trucks watch for pedestrians. The confusion at corners is something to behold. First the biggest and loudest horn all determines right-of-way.

It is raining now and has since noon. I guess it's making up for 3 days it didn't.

But the way, I will be transferred Monday to the Tan Son Nhut school so on my address where "KC" is now, put "TSN". I don't know what my job will be yet, maybe the same thing. It is a lot bigger school with about 180 instructors to our 40. Probably within 2 or 3 months this whole "KC" operation will be turned over to Army & Navy anyway so I'm just as glad. It will be a 25-30 minute bus ride instead of 10.

Sweetie, a maid to make the bed and shine shoes is OK but a wife is still better. As for the rest, you are attractive enough to catch and hold me and I wouldn't want you too slender. I might roll on top of you in bed and smother you. Besides, if you love me that's what really counts, anyway.

I finished reading the books I had & today got "A Bell For Adano". That should be a good one.

It's amazing what you find in reading the scriptures. Read Luke 1:59-66. Bro. & Sis. Johnson are still there, eh. He is a likeable old (and smart) guy. Tell them I said "Hi".

Well, today ends that first month and only 11 more to go.

If you haven't found my Patriarchal Blessing, look in the pockets of my black briefcase, also the small brown one. No, I didn't have one at the office.

Well, it's dinner time so I'll close for now and go out in the rain. Luckily, its only 50 feet to the other door.

I love you all. Be sweet and be careful.

Love & Hugs,

Daddy

Note:  According to my diary entry..."Mom got pecked in the eye on Friday and almost went blind."

I have no recollection of anything named "Chipper".

13 August

Dear Family,

Got your letter today that was written last Friday and I was real glad to hear from you, even that long letter from the man of the house.

Poor Nancy, it sure is a cold, cruel world for 14 year olds these days. But Peanuts, remember it can only get better when things are so bad. Next year will be your big turn for all the nice things. And even your mean old Dad will be home.

You said to get a can of Lysol spray to use in the bathroom after my roommate uses it, well, I have never seen my roommate. He doesn't have anything at all there, just pays the hotel fee each month so his C.O. won't get after him.

Sure glad you passed your driver test, it would be bad if you had to walk or let Carol drive you around.

Don't be too surprised and unhappy if you don't hear from Dave & Erma. You know how I am about writing and I would guess that they are much the same. George should be home by now and I know that makes Lynn happy. Their boys didn't act too bad at the airport, but you could tell the difference between them and Joyce's. Eileen is 13 I think and she really wanted to talk to me a lot. She seemed like a real good kid but Joyce said she was the typical teenager (dates, clothes, etc.) and they had some disagreements. Joyce & Bob are trying to buy a house in the country.

We got the news today that, starting Monday, Aug 17 we (AF) will go to 1 shift a day here at Koepler. That will probably mean that some of the supervisors will be transferred to TSN, and since I am the junior MSgt that may include me. I don't think that I will mind that. I would still live the same place, etc, just catch a different bus to work is all.

Well, that's about the news for today. Pass around a hug from me. Stay sweet, I love you all.

The Old Man,

Daddy

"Peanuts" was dad's nickname for Nancy for as long as I can remember.
